Episode 89 Quick Bite: Baking for the Dog Days of Summer

Andrea’s having fun making her big black dog, Filson, some special treats. While cooking her way through Thomas Keller’s cookbook, Bouchon Bakery, she tried the Foie Gras Dog Biscuits and made them…exactly one time, which led to Filson’s love of the sound of the KitchenAid mixer.

Since foie gras biscuits aren’t part of Andrea’s regular repertoire (or budget!), she switched to her friend Tim’s tasty dog biscuits. These treats are made from whole wheat flour, powdered milk, garlic powder, shortening, eggs, and a tiny bit of brown sugar. After mixing all of the ingredients together, you bake them for 20-30 minutes at 350 degrees. Here’s a link to Tim’s Tasty Dog Treats recipe.

While biscuits are a year round treat, ice cream is something for special occasions. A Seattle company named Swell makes a gelato for dogs, which Filson absolutely loves, especially the pumpkin flavor. Andrea tried making her own dog gelato using the easy  ‘3 ingredient’ recipe: bananas, yogurt, and peanut butter. While it was pretty easy to whip these up, and her dog loved the flavor, that particular recipe came back to bite her, as the yogurt was a source of gastric distress in the middle of the night. (Note: Swell uses coconut milk, not regular dairy milk, in their gelato ingredients).

Please do be careful when feeding your dog homemade food. There are several items that are toxic or upsetting to dogs, including chocolate, avocados, grapes and raisins, just to name a few. And especially xylitol, the artificial sweetener –  you’ll want to make sure you check your peanut butter brand and confirm this isn’t an ingredient. Do your research, and check with your vet before feeding your dog any new foods to make sure it’s not an ingredient that would be toxic for your pup.

Listeners, do you make any special homemade pet treats?
