Andrea’s intrigued with healthier ingredients like seeds, buckwheat, groats and dried fruits in her desserts, and recently branched out of her comfort zone while at Portland, OR’s Seastar bakery. Their coconut cookie made with millet and, yes, her old nemesis, raisins, was yummy and eye-opening. Did she stumble into a delicious parallel universe, or is she simply refining her tastes? Check back in 2038 to find out!
Meantime, Stefin is happy to see actress Leslie Mann wearing her J. Crew lemon sweater in promotional pics for her new movie, Blockers. The plot doesn’t seem to have much to do with citrus, but it’s always nice to see more lemon love.
Andrea also has a quick update for folks unable to find Meyer lemons, thanks to an article on the Food52 blog. Turns out, you can substitute some tangerine juice along with regular lemons to get close to that Meyer sweetness.
Time to hop across the pond for the duo’s review of the historic British steamed dessert, the Sussex Pond Pudding from Guardian food writer Felicity Cloake. Andrea was feeling Stefin’s Crisco pain from Episode 47 when she had to embark on “The Search for Suet” Stateside. She wasn’t successful, but she did stumble upon a wonderful mini cookbook by Geoff Wells, How to Make Spotted Dick and Other Suet Puddings which helpfully mentioned she could substitute leaf lard. Bringing this ancient recipe neatly into modern times, Andrea used her Instant Pot and turned out a stunning pud in just over two hours. Stefin used the traditional four-hour water bath method with equally fabulous results. Both hosts encourage you to try this unique and beautiful dessert. It’s something like a caramel-lemon pie, and best eaten warm (no matter the time of day).
Finally, it’s a month with five Mondays, so it’s Blue Ribbon time. Andrea pins her award on the Sussex Pond Pudding, which is now also her front runner for best dish of second season (!), and Stefin loves the creamy, comforting, versatile and easy Coconut Tapioca Pudding with Mango and Lime from Episode 72.
