Episode 5: Fruitcake and Eggnog

While sipping petite portions of their homemade eggnog (which is creamy and delicious and worth every bit of effort and time spent waiting for it to cure) Stefin and Andrea recap their Thanksgiving desserts — including Stefin’s store-bought pumpkin-gingerbread pie, and Andrea’s Italian-themed pumpkin-gingerbread semifreddo. While both were delicious, they agree that sometimes the classics are the best. And speaking of classics, Andrea reports wowing her husband with pecan pie bars that are perfect when you just want a teeny taste of sweetness.

Next up, the hosts slice into their Macadamia Nut Fruitcake and both agree it’s divine. Think rich pound cake studded with dried fruit (Andrea has some clever variations) and soaked in molasses rum (Stefin) or brandy. Free your mind of fruitcake preconceptions and whip up a batch today!

Kicking off a month of holiday gifts from the kitchen, Stefin and Andrea introduce the aptly named Happy People Fudge, a gift from a former co-worker of Andrea’s that literally keeps on giving.

In the Language Lab, Andrea explains that homemade eggnog should be served in a coupe, which is not only a two-door car but also an elegant champagne glass from the 1940s. Together, the hosts give a short run-down on calibrating your oven, which is more controversial than it may seem at first blush. Finally, Stefin (a.k.a., Magazine Maven) asserts that if you’re only going to buy one magazine this season, make it the December issue of Southern Living. (And stayed tuned for updates on the two cakes Andrea and Stefin want to try from this issue!)
