Back in May 2019 the hosts had fun with “Made it Myself” month, when they recreated all sorts of grocery store favorites like Oreos and Pop Tarts. But what if your grocery shelf favorite is completely gone? Andrea’s husband had fond memories of the Carnation Breakfast Bar he had as a kid, and it turns out he’s not the only one.
Gone But Not Forgotten Groceries is a fun website that meanders down the grocery store aisles of your childhood. Whether it’s cereal, candy, beverages or snacks, you’re sure to find something on this site that sparks a fun memory. For Andrea’s husband, it was the Carnation Breakfast Bars, specifically, the peanut butter granola flavor.
Carnation made the bars from the mid-70’s through early 90’s, so chances are that you had one as a kid if you grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. They have their own Facebook Page with over 8,000 followers, and Andrea found a link to the Carnation Breakfast Bar Copycat recipe on Food.com.
Armed with her husband’s instructions to make these bars “dense, yet chewy” Andrea made several modification and additions, eventually ending up with her own Cookie Butter Breakfast Bar recipe. Her husband pronounced it ‘pretty close’ to the original, while his co-workers said the bar reminded them of Kudos bars, originally launched in 1986.
Listeners, if you make this recipe, we’d love to know what you think!
