Episode 134: Lazy Daisy Cake Nothing Short of Amazing

Have a bit of a summertime cold? Perhaps the historical English dessert called a posset might provide a cure. This mixture of curdled cream and beer certainly seems ripe for modernization! Thank goodness Melisa Clark has come up with a a modern day No Bake Lemon Custard interpretation, which Andrea is excited to try.

Recipe Review: Lazy Daisy Cake from Tori Avey

On to this week’s recipe review, Stefin’s long awaited Lazy Daisy Cake from Tori Avey, a new favorite of both the hosts. From bowl to oven, you’ll have hot cake in 30 minutes or less! Andrea did a bit of outsourcing and left her husband in charge of the cake baking, with great results. She also shortened the broiling time to two minutes. Stefin’s reminded of the Cold Chocolate Snacking Cake we made back in Episode 4, and thinks this cake might be a perfect ‘first cake’ for kids, similar to the hot milk cake she first made as a young child.

Bake Along: Nanaimo Bars from City of Nanaimo

Venturing into municipal websites for the first time, the hosts are excited to introduce the City of Nanaimo’s award-winning Nanaimo Bars. Andrea and Stefin ponder the contest that inspired these award winning bars, and wonder if other cities might have similar recipes on their websites? And if you’re looking to do some intensive Nanaimo Bar research, consider following the Nanaimo Bar Trail. If you’re making this recipe, plan on serving it chilled. Planning ahead, vanilla custard powder can usually be found in the British section of the grocery store, although you can substitute instant vanilla pudding.

Delicious Dilemmas

How do the hosts make their grocery store selections when they’re ‘spoiled for choice?’ Andrea admits to being a sucker for pricing promotions, especially the ‘pleasant surprise’ coupon. Stefin’s certainly tempted by Alliterative Price Promotion and admits Two Tea Tins for $22 is a tempting offer. Both hosts explore how ambient smells affect their buying decisions, and ultimately resolve not to shop when hungry, and stick to their grocery lists instead of picking up impulse buys.

Listeners, how do you make your buying decisions? And what are some of your tips to keep on task and on budget in the grocery store?
