It’s Preheated’s Third Annual Pie Month! But before Stefin and Andrea roll out the top crust, they each report on some progress with their “19 for ‘19” Baking Resolutions.
Stefin started on her “Turkish Delight(s)” resolution with Turkish pide. Similar to pizza, but fashioned in its trademark “boat” shape, this yeasted dough was new to Stefin, and a hit with her and her family. (Here’s a recipe similar to the one she used.)
In Olympia, Andrea’s following recipes! (Yes, you read that right.) Because she wanted to be sure her King Arthur Flour Flourless Fudge Cookies were the best they could possibly be, she followed the instructions to the letter, and turned out some of her favorite cookies ever! (Pro tip: Make them big for extra chewiness, and try them cold from the fridge!) And remember these cookies when you need to use up egg whites!
This Week’s Bake Along: Next-Level Banoffee Pie from BBC Good Food
Kicking off the first week of all-things pie is an updated take on the British pie that has a small but significant role in Love, Actually, actually: Next-Level Banoffee Pie from BBC Good Food magazine. New to pie? Ease into it with this cookie-crumb crust topped with layers of roasted bananas, caramel and peanut-butter whipped cream. (Yes, please!) Can’t find the British Milk or Dark Hobnobs called for in the recipe? Try crisp oatmeal cookies or chocolate graham crackers. Both hosts think a regular pie plate will work just fine, too, if you don’t have a fluted tart tin. Bake along and post your pictures to our Facebook community!
A Brief History of Pie
Then, the duo head back, waaaay back, to discuss the origins of pie, and the many twists and turns it’s taken on the road to the county fair. Did you know pie probably got its start in 6000 BC, is featured in Egyptian artwork in the Valley of the Kings, was once filled with live birds (and human beings), and used to be served at breakfast, lunch and dinner? So much fascinating pie-story! (Thanks as always to Whatscookingamerica.net for being such an amazing food history resource!)
