Strawberry Icebox Cake

Episode 83: Icebox Cake Ups Your No Bake Dessert Game!

Andrea kicks off the episode with a report from her latest Cookbook Club at Olympia’s Browsers Book Shop. Eating from a wide variety of delicious treats from two of Molly Wizenberg’s food memoirs: A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes From My Kitchen Table and Delancey: A Man, A Woman, A Restaurant, A Marriage, Andrea thinks she will try the coconut rice pudding back at home. Inspired by her recent interview with Helen Goh in Episode 80, Stefin’s eyeing a Peppermint Mocha Popcorn Brownie recipe, while Andrea’s wondering how to get the perfect bite of that into her mouth!

Last week’s dessert was the Strawberry Icebox Cake from Faith Durand over at The Kitchn. Stefin struggled to find graham crackers in London and substituted rich tea biscuits. While delicious, she felt the texture wasn’t quite right and she thinks a custard layer might add to her pleasure in eating this dish. Andrea picked up Cinnamon Sugar Graham Crackers (by mistake) and reduced the graham cracker layers (just because she doesn’t like cinnamon) to two layers, and she cut the recipe in half with great success.

Up next week is Semifreddo with Honeyed Peaches from Women’s Day Magazine. (Stefin’s finally getting the hang of saying it with an Italian flourish!) We hope you’ll try this one too. Andrea reminds the listeners that they can make their own Creme Fraiche at home with heavy cream and buttermilk.

Lifelong learners Andrea and Stefin continue to explore how their dessert choices inform their personalities. You may remember their Baking Horoscopes in Episode 52, and the Candy Quiz in Episode 73. Now it’s time for Spoon University and “What Does Your Favorite Dessert Say About You?” Andrea went with Brownies while Stefin picked Pie. As usual, both hosts had fun picking out the comments that applied, and those that most decidedly didn’t, and figuring out who they’re most compatible with!

Listeners, what does your favorite dessert say about you?
